Salary for your child carer

If you are new to the nanny world, then it is difficult to figure out the standard salaries, responsibilities and hours. Nanny salaries, unlike other industries, are stated in net terms.

A standard workday for a full-time, live out nanny is about 10 hours, but it is not unheard of to have your nanny work 12. The standard work week for this type of nanny is 5 days a week, some nannies work even 6 full days, but only for the relevant salary. All live-out nannies are usually paid an hourly rate although weekly salary is usually agreed, and any evening babysitting your nanny does is paid in addition.

Live in nannies on the other hand, can expect to work longer hours as they are granted the convenience of not having to commute. A full work week for a live-in nanny is again 5 full days and sometimes half Saturday is included, plus 1-2 nights of babysitting, which are included in her salary (not paid additionally).

The final salary also depends on the experience and qualification of the nanny, number and age of your children, if it is a sole charge or care shared with the mother, and also if you require your nanny to do the housework as well. Also, you can provide your nanny with other benefits on top of her salary, as covering her travel expenses, paying for her flights home, helping with her visas, bonuses or salary rise after some period.

** usually for evening babysitting, depends on the experience of the babysitter and also the duties you require from her – if the children are asleep and she only needs to keep an eye on them, or if feeding, bathing and putting to bed is also required. Also, some parents pay for a taxi when late babysitting is needed, or even drive the babysitter home to ensure her safety.

You will notice that After School & Weekend Nanny hourly rates are generally higher than those of the typical live-out nanny. They are, however, reflective of supply and demand. Both are not easy to come by. Also, the After School Nanny position often prohibits the nanny from finding another job with which to supplement her income, as it demands afternoons during term-time and full-time during the school holidays.
